The rain pittered and pattered on the beach, slowly drenching the sand. It fell on the ocean, adding ripples to the waves. The seashells were getting a bath and the crabs were finding a place to hide.

Penny and Coco were in their homes, doing cozy things before they realized it started raining. Coco loved looking out the window when it rained. So that’s what she did when she first realized it was raining. She heard the soft rain hit her roof and let out a sigh. She always loved the sound of rain, it helped her feel so relaxed.

Then she heard a knock on the door. Coco walked to the door and opened it. “It’s raining!” Penny shouted, “Come on out and play with me!”

Penny was already covered. Water dripped from her leaves and down her yellow head. Penny waved her arms in excitement and water splashed onto the floor. Coco thought for a moment and then reached for her blue umbrella. “Sure,” she replied, “That sounds fun.”

The two friends stepped outside. Penny ran towards the puddles and Coco stood on her front porch and observed. Being in the rain is different from watching it inside. The sound thunders in your ears and is now all around you. Coco held her hand out from her umbrella and felt the raindrops fall onto her hand. She walked over to Penny to get a closer look at the ripples in the puddle formed by the rain. As soon as she came over, Penny kicked some water in the puddle toward her. “Stop!” cried Coco.

“Why?” replied Penny, “It’s fun!”

Penny tried splashing Coco again. Coco knew she wanted to play, but she didn’t want to get wet. So she ran away from Penny to look at the raindrops dripping off the petal of a pink flower. Penny came over next to Coco. “Why don’t you want to play?” Penny asked.

“I do want to play,” replied Coco, “But I don’t want to get wet when I play.”

Penny understood and sat a little while with Coco and tried to observe the flower with her. It was interesting for a little while, but now it was boring. Penny sat down and started patting the water that fell on her feet. Worried that it would make Coco get wet, she got up to find another puddle to jump in.

Coco finally looked up and found Penny had already left. She saw Penny nearby jumping in another puddle. She didn’t want to get fully wet like Penny, but maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if she got her feet wet. She stood up and walked to a puddle next to Penny’s and patted her feet in the water, noticing the sploshy sound it made. Soon, Coco was giggling with Penny as Penny tried to make the biggest splashes. Sometimes they were really big and Coco had to move out of the way to avoid getting wet. Sometimes Penny would slip and fall into the puddle, this made Coco laugh.

“Thanks for waiting until I was ready to play with you Penny,” Coco told her before she headed home, “I had so much fun in the rain with you.”

“I’m so glad we found a way to play together!” replied Penny, “Now, what’s the best way to get this mud off?”

Coco giggled. Before she could reply, Penny was already heading home. Coco took one more look up at the rainy sky, so happy she was out here in it. She decided to take a jump into the puddle before going inside. Right when she did, she slipped and fell.
