Penny was walking on top of the hill, above Bubble Beach, humming a hum she made up. She felt the warm breeze brush along her back, the warm sun beaming down on her face, and heard the waves roll in the distance. It was a beautiful day.
Then a new smell caught her attention. It stopped her hum because the smell was so delicious! She closed her eyes and breathed in deeply to savor it. “Coco must be baking today,” thought Penny, “I wonder what she made. It smells yummy!”
Penny walked up to Coco’s house. On the way, she found the kitchen window was open. The curtains inside fluttered with the breeze. Penny walked right up to the window and peeped inside. Coco was walking up to the oven to pull out the baked good. “It’s perfect!” Coco cried out with glee.
In her hands, was a perfect, golden pie. But what kind of pie? Penny couldn’t tell yet. “What kind of pie did you make today, Coco?” Penny asked.
Coco shrieked and almost dropped the pie. “Oh, Penny,” Coco gasped, “I didn’t know you were here.”
“Oh, sorry I scared you. I could smell your pie on my walk,” Penny replied, “It smells so good!!”
Coco walked up to the table and set the pie down for it to cool off. “Thank you,” she replied, “It’s a blueberry pie.”
“Ooo! Are those the blueberries from our garden?” cried Penny. “I’d like to try some, please?”
“We’ll have to wait until it’s cooled down first,” Coco answered, “But I was planning on coming over to share it with you.”
Penny danced a happy dance! Coco was the best baker she knew. She loved everything Coco made. She heard that eating food fresh from your garden tasted the best, she couldn’t wait to find out if that was true. Then she thought of an idea. “I have a great idea!” she exclaimed, “I have some ice cream at home I can bring right over!”
Penny turned around and left. Blueberry pie and ice cream? It was a match made in heaven.
Coco laughed at Penny as she ran off, she had the cutest dances and they always made Coco smile. She turned to grab tableware for their treat. She grabbed her pretty plates and nice forks for the occasion. It wasn’t everyday you made blueberry pie with blueberries from your garden. Penny would be even more excited seeing all the nice tableware too.
Coco finished setting the table and Penny hadn’t come back yet. That’s odd, she should be back by now. Coco looked out her window to see if Penny was on her way. She wasn’t.
A cloud caught Coco’s eye. It looked so fluffy and soft, like the ones you see in a painting. Sometimes, she and Penny liked to sit on the grass and watch the clouds and see which objects they looked like. Coco really liked that game. She rested her head in her hands as she look up and found an elephant, a snake, and a blueberry pie in the clouds. Penny would like to see that last cloud.
“I’m here!” Penny shouted.
Coco shrieked again. “Oh, sorry to scare you again, Coco,” Penny huffed, “I couldn’t pick which ice cream to bring over. I couldn’t decide which flavor would suit blueberry the best. So I decided to stick with vanilla, just to be safe.”
Coco smiled. “Vanilla is perfect. I wanted to show you something.”
She looked up at the clouds, but found the one shaped like her pie was gone. “Oh, nevermind. The cloud shaped like a pie flew away.”
Penny came inside. The ice cream had softened and the pie cooled down. With a slice of pie and dollop of ice cream, they were ready to enjoy their treat. “Let’s go outside while we eat,” said Coco.
Penny couldn’t wait to eat it, but she also loved being outside. She quickly gathered her plate and fork and went outside to find a comfy spot while Coco put the ice cream away.
The ice cream started melting on top of the pie. The crust started becoming soft and gooey. Penny’s anticipation grew as she waited for Coco. Finally, Coco came outside with her pie and sat down. Penny then scooped up a piece with her fork and took a bite.
It was even better than she had imagined. The vanilla ice cream was the perfect pair with the tart blueberry pie. Good thing she didn’t bring over the bubble gum flavor.
These blueberries were so much juicier than the ones she usually gets at the store. It was incredible! “Thank you, Coco!” Penny cried, “This pie is amazing!!”
Coco smiled and took a bite herself. Penny was right, it tasted amazing. She was impressed with how well it turned out. “Do you think pie with fruit from the garden tastes better than it would from the store?” asked Coco.
With a mouth full of pie, Penny muttered, “Definitely!”
After they finished their pie, they looked at the clouds. Penny started looking to see if she could see the clouds as different shapes. “Oh, look! There’s one shaped like a blueberry pie!” Coco exclaimed, “It came back!”
And this time, Penny shrieked with excitement.
