The garden wasn’t small anymore. Everything Penny and Coco had planted and cared for grew over the summer. Lucious green leaves had sprouted every where, tomatoes became red and plump, the carrot’s stems waved proudly in the wind, and blueberries glistened and gleamed in the sun.
It was a little too early in the morning for Coco to be awake, but she was very excited to work in their garden today. Her mind was spinning with all the recipes she could make and all the canning she’ll get to do as well. She loved working on the garden this year, especially with Penny.
They had learned so much this year taking care of their garden. While their strawberries didn’t survive this year, they were still so happy with what they were able to grow. In June, the roses bloomed and looked so pretty. Penny loved them so much, she didn’t even mind the bees that loved them too.
But today wasn’t a day to admire the roses, there was work to be done. Today was the harvest day! All the fruits and vegetables were ready to picked. Penny was so excited too. As they walked to the garden you hear could Penny yelling, “Harvest day! Harvest day!”
But where to begin? They had grown so much. Penny kept looking around, not sure where to start. Coco decided the best place to start was what was closest to them, and that was the carrots. “Good idea,” replied Penny.
Penny set the basket near the carrots and Coco reached for the first carrot to pull out. But it wouldn’t budge.
Coo pulled harder. Nothing. She pulled and pulled and the carrot still wouldn’t move! “Can you help me?” Coco asked Penny.
Penny ran over to help. “You try pulling again, and I’ll pull you from behind,” Penny suggested, walking behind her.
Coco pulled again, and Penny pulled Coco. They pulled and pulled, then suddenly the carrot popped out. Penny and Coco fell back to the ground as the carrot came out. “We did it!” Penny cried enthusiastically as she stood.
She repeated herself over and over again, twirling around. She twirled around a few times, turning her cheer into a song. Coco watched her, holding the carrot in hand. Suddenly, Penny stumbled on a rock and fell down again with an “oof”.
Coco giggled at Penny, then stood up to help Penny get back up.
Luckily, the rest of the carrots were much easier to pull out. Then they harvested the tomatoes, blueberries, and all the other fruits and vegetables they had planted. They had buckets and buckets full of fresh food just waiting to be washed and eaten. Penny and Coco were so excited.
Finally, they got to sit down on the grass just outside their garden. It was all bare again, just like when they first started. “Let’s do this again next year,” Coco told Penny. “And I want to do even more fruits and vegetables next time.”
“Yea!” cried Penny, “And even more flowers too!”
Then they started planning which fruits and vegetable to grow, Penny mentioned she really wanted a pumpkin patch. Coco added that they could plant tulips right now and they’ll be ready for Spring.
This garden had started out so small, just little seeds in the ground. But over the summer, it grew into something special. Especially because Penny and Coco grew it together. It really was the most beautiful garden ever.
