The tulips swayed in the breeze. They did not look as bright and cheerful as they usually do because it was a cloudy day today. Penny and Coco walked around the field, so excited to be in the Netherlands to see the tulips, but a little discouraged because it was a cloudy day.
It wasn’t too long, before Coco stopped in her tracks. “Oh, no!” she cried out.
“What’s wrong?” asked Penny as she turned around.
Coco looked down, starting to feel sad. “I forgot the umbrella. It’s suppose to rain today,” she replied.
Coco really didn’t like getting wet from the rain. “And we can’t go back to get it.”
She was right. The tulips were far away from where they were staying to go back. Now Coco was becoming worried about the rain. She looked up at the clouds, still dark and looming overhead.
Penny thought for a moment about what to do. She also felt sorry for forgetting it too. What to do about it now?
“I know!” Penny cried out, “If it starts to rain, we can run over to those trees over there to hide from the rain! It’s not too far.”
Coco looked over to the trees on the other side of the field. They weren’t that close, but they were closer than where the umbrella is. “I like that idea. Thanks, Penny,” Coco smiled.
Though she was happy they had a plan, she still felt uncertain about the rain as they continued walking through the tulip field.
They walked for some time, admiring the tulips, wishing the sun was out, and still a little worried about the rain. Then, out of the blue, Penny thought she felt a rain drop on her head. “Coco!” Penny cried out, “It’s started raining! Quick, we have to go!”
As she said that, Penny made a run for the trees on the other side of the field, continuing to yell out about the rain. She didn’t get very far because she accidentally tripped over a rock and landed on her face.
Penny sat up and looked at Coco. Somehow they both realized at the same time it wasn’t raining. Then they started laughing together. “You’re so funny, Penny, running away when it wasn’t actually raining,” Coco giggled.
“Yea,” Penny agreed, still laughing, “That was really funny. I could have sworn I felt a rain drop, though.”
Coco helped Penny get up. “Still,” said Penny, “I’m glad it’s actually not raining.”
Coco giggled, “Me too.”
Coco felt much better knowing how much Penny cared about her staying dry.
A moment later, the clouds separated and the sun finally shown through. They both stopped for a moment to soak in all of the beautiful colors. “Wow!” cried Penny, “It’s so beautiful!”
Coco nodded. She was glad she stayed and even more glad Penny was such a good friend to her. As the sun shone brighter, Coco covered her eyes and then laughed to herself. Now she wanted her sunglasses instead.
